“We want to transform uninteresting everyday products into something you will pay attention to”
In the year 2002 designer Jens Thoms Ivarsson and stonemason Mats Nilsson decided to transform uninteresting everyday products into something people would pay attention to. Their ambition was to combine art and design; to mix experience with functionality where the design highlights the idea, and with a combined emphasis on the use of durable materials and high quality craftsmanship. Therefore, it is possible for future generations to live and re-live an experience through the sculptures and products designed and created by Thoms & Nilsson.
History
Ten years after meeting Mats Nilsson, Jens Thoms Ivarsson designed the acclaimed Tradition hand-basin, where water flows magically around its sculptured edge. The success of this product convinced them to start Thoms & Nilsson.
A small exhibition at the Chelsea Hotel in New York led to an exhibition at Salone Satellite in Milano which gained the pair international media attention. Exhibitions and projects in London, Oslo, Berlin, Paris, Copenhagen, Riyadh, Santiago, Istanbul, Manchester, Viinistu, Tokyo and Jukkasjärvi, among others, followed.
Since 2003, Thoms & Nilsson have worked with natural ice from the ICEHOTEL in Jukkasjärvi on several acknowledged projects worldwide. The duo participated in creating an ice and snow catwalk for Chanel during the Paris Fashion Week 2010. Karl Lagerfeld received Thoms & Nilssons’ pink leaflet, and a tip from Jens that he should wear rubber boots when walking about on the melting catwalk.
Thoms & Nilsson have participated in multiple national and international publications and TV shows. In 2007, four products by Thoms & Nilsson won two platinum, one gold and one silver awards at the prestigious ADEX Awards in the USA. In 2009 Jens was joint winner for a project for Mitsubishi Heavy Industries at the Gold Award in Japan.
This is a snapshot of our past, now let’s write the history of the future together.
